BMW is developing a BMW 1 Series Gran Turismo to compliment the future 2014 1 Series range. The car will offer a sleek shooting break style layout similar to the current BMW 5 Series GT and the upcoming BMW 3 Series GT.
According to reports, the 2014 BMW 1 Series will be built on BMW’s new front-wheel drive UKL1 platform. The platform will be used on all upcoming BMW 1 Series models, including a hatch, coupe and convertible. A possible wagon version is also on the cards.
The platform will lend itself to both front-drive and four-wheel drive layouts, sparking speculation that BMW will come up with a sub-off-road wagon slightly larger than the MINI Countryman down the track. The platform will also be used on future MINI models and will incorporate a MacPherson strut front suspension setup and BMW’s Z-axle design at the rear.
As for the GT version, BMW will be aiming at taking sales from the popular Audi A3 Sportback, showcasing a larger rear compartment than a conventional hatch, with the added practicality of wagon-like rear space.
The 2014 BMW 1 Series will bump the current 1 Series from its entry-level position, while the 1 Series as we know it today will become the BMW 2 Series, according to reports.
